Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as Delta 8 THC, is a psychoactive substance found in the Cannabis Sativa plant, of which marijuana and hemp are two varieties.
Delta 8 THC is one of over 100 cannabinoids produced naturally by the cannabis plant but is not found in significant amounts in the cannabis plant. As a result, concentrated amounts of Delta 8 THC are typically manufactured from hemp-derived Cannabidiol (CBD).
Delta 8 THC can be synthesized through a chemical reaction that converts CBD (Cannabidiol) into Delta 8. The process involves a series of chemical steps, and typically requires specialized equipment and expertise.
Here's a basic overview of the synthesis process:
1. Extract CBD: First, CBD is extracted from cannabis or hemp using a solvent-based method, such as CO2 extraction or ethanol extraction. The resulting crude CBD oil is then purified to remove any residual solvents and other impurities.
2. Isomerization: The purified CBD oil is then subjected to a process called Isomerization, which involves changing the arrangement of the atoms in the CBD molecule to create Delta 8 THC. This is typically done using a chemical catalyst which can facilitate the reaction.
3. Refinement: After the Isomerization reaction is complete, the resulting mixture is typically refined to remove any remaining impurities and unwanted byproducts. This can be done through a variety of methods, such as chromatography or distillation.
4. Testing and quality control: The final Delta 8 product is then tested to ensure that it meets purity and potency standards, as well as any other quality criteria that may be required by law or regulation.
The passage of the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018, also known as the Farm Bill, removed hemp and its derivatives, including Delta 8 THC, from the list of controlled substances under federal law, provided that the final product contains no more than 0.3% Delta 9 THC by dry weight. This means that Delta 8 THC derived from hemp is legal under federal law.
However, some states have implemented their own laws or regulations that restrict or ban the use of Delta 8 THC. Some states have even banned Delta 8 THC outright, while others allow it but with restrictions on sale or use. It's important to research and understand the laws and regulations in your particular state if you are considering using Delta 8 THC products.
Delta 8 THC is a psychoactive and intoxicating cannabinoid synthetically produced as a secondary compound from CBD or Delta 9 THC. Effects usually include a milder "high" with reduced anxiety compared to Delta 9 THC.
Delta 9 THC is the most common cannabinoid found in cannabis that causes the "high" and possible feelings of euphoria with potential side effects.
CBD can possibly share similar benefits of Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC without providing the "high." Potential advantages might be relief from chronic pain, depression and stress.
All cannabinoids involve interactions with the Endocannabinoid system in the body, responsible for handling inflammation, pain control and other functions.
